THE NORTH-EAST was battening down the hatches last night as weathermen predicted a day of high winds.

But hundreds of homeowners near York were able to breathe a sigh of relief after dangerous river levels began to subside.

A Met Office spokesman said: "It will be a very windy day indeed, with gales that are likely to be damaging in places.

"Between the sunshine there will be squally showers. About the best thing we can say is that it won't be particularly cold at 7C."

Meanwhile home-owners in York will be hoping the strong winds don't bring more rain.

The Environment Agency issued flood warnings for homes bordering the riverbanks on the Ouse yesterday.

An unexpected lull in the rain allowed water levels to fall back and the warning was lifted last night.

The strong winds will be blowing in from the Highlands of Scotland, which was warned to expect gales gusting up to 100mph overnight.

"We haven't seen winds this strong this winter. We could see some tiles being blown off and there's a risk of trees falling down and disruption being caused to electricity pylons and telephone lines," said a PA WeatherCentre spokeswoman.
