THIS particular ball may be over for Zoe Birkett - but the fairytale remains very much alive.

Zoe, the 16-year-old from Darlington, has to get used to no longer being part of the weekly Pop Idol ritual which has become such a national obsession with television viewers.

Sadly, she was voted out on Saturday night- but she is far from a loser.

Over the weeks in which the nation has been captivated by her blossoming talent, Zoe Birkett has proved herself to be a real star.

There can be little doubt that she will go on to become a celebrity in this country and possibly the around the world.

The judges, apart from this week's critical comments, have consistently praised the wonderful quality of her voice. No 16-year-old, they said, should be able to sing like that.

She has done the North-East, County Durham and Darlington proud, not just with her singing but with the way she has conducted herself and with a smile that has oozed maturity, confidence and happiness.

She is also a credit to her parents who, despite going their separate ways, have made sure she was given every opportunity to fulfil her potential. And, crucially, she is a fantastic role model for her generation.

Now it is time for Darlington to underline what she has achieved. No doubt, there will be record contracts and agents to deal with, but it is to be hoped that time can be found for a celebratory homecoming.

At the very least, there should be a civic reception for Darlington's teenage ambassador.

But wouldn't it be exciting if a "welcome home" event could be arranged at the Civic Theatre in her home town, with youngsters displaying their talents and Zoe topping the bill?

With local charities benefiting, it would be the perfect way for Zoe to thank Darlington for its support, and for Darlington to celebrate her success.

It is to be hoped that enough strings can be pulled to make it happen. The Northern Echo, which has supported her all the way, will certainly be trying to play its part.
