Police hunt for bag snatcher

Police are appealing for witnesses after a young woman had her handbag snatched at Bishop Auckland Bus Station.

The woman was standing opposite Berties Clothing, near Stand A in the bus station, at 6.10pm on Saturday, when she was approached from behind by a man who grabbed her bag and ran off towards Tenters Street.

She did not see the man's face but described him as being 5ft 5in, of thin build, and wearing a dark woollen hat, a cream three-quarter length coat tied at the waist.

POLICE SURGERY: A police and Neighbourhood Watch surgery will be held at Howden-le-Wear Community Centre, Hargill Road, on Wednesday, from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. Any residents wishing to raise an issue concerning the police or Neighbourhood Watch will be able to raise them with PC Philip McLehone, Neighbourhood Watch representative John Raw and local councillor Kathleen Parkin.

CHARITY NIGHT: A line dancing charity night with the Dean Brothers at the Elite Hall, Crook, on Saturday, at 7.30pm has been sold out. Proceeds will be divided between the Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland and local charity Helping Hands.

ANNUAL MEETING: The Sedgefield Community Association Garden Society is holding its annual meeting in Ceddesfeld Hall, on February 5, at 7.30pm. The meeting will be followed by a pie and peas supper.

MUSIC DATE: Crook Town Football Club present singer Angie Rich plus a disco at the social club on Saturday, at 8.15pm. Tickets cost £2 and are available from committee members or from the club house.

TODDLER GROUP: A parent and toddler group meets in the Methodist Chapel, Bridge Street, Howden-le-Wear, every Monday and Friday, from 10am to 11.30am.

COUNTRY WALK: A guided walk around the Baydale area of Darlington, led by Elizabeth Elliot and organised by Darlington Borough Council, will take place on February 20, starting at 1.40pm from the layby near the Baydale Beck pub, off the A67.

CASH CALL: Darlington Lions are appealing for people with old European currency to donate it to charity. The euro has replaced currencies in 12 European countries, but the Lions want to convert old currency into pounds. The Lions' Bookshop, in Blackwellgate, is open to take currency from 9.30am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday, except Wednesdays
