A GROUP of teachers are spending their half-term break looking at the educational system in South Africa.

The nine teachers from Darlington want to study the links between primary and secondary schools and how pupils move between the two.

The visit has been organised by the Teachers' International Professional Development programme.

The five secondary and four primary teachers, are from Carmel RC Technical College, Hummersknott School and Language College, St Augustine's primary and St Teresa's primary schools.

The teachers are led by John Thorley and include Richard Biddle, Helen Keough, Rod Davies, Liz McCardie, Pat West, Grainne Archbold, Maurine Geaney and Gerry Connor.

During their week-long stay the group will visit both public and private schools in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Soweto
