PLANS to provide a visitor centre at a Hartlepool church look set to be approved.

Councillors from Hartlepool Borough Council's community services and safety board will meet on Friday to discuss plans for the visitor centre at St Hilda's Church on the Headland.

A report to the council said: "The church is generally regarded as the most important historical building on the Headland and its architecture, history and physical presence already make it a focal point for visitors.

"The improvement of the church's facilities are however, seen as an important part of the overall plan for attracting visitors to the Headland."

Some external work, including floodlighting, has been carried out and work on the restoration of the churchyard is due to begin soon.

The latest phase will develop the inside of the church with lots of interpretation boards. The project will run as a three-year Single Regeneration Bubget funded scheme with a cost to the North Hartlepool Partnership of £373,000 and £80,000 revenue funding.
