A SERVICE is to be held to commemorate the life of a former North-East bishop.
An Evensong and Commemoration of the Life of the Right Reverend Alexander Hamilton, who was Bishop of Jarrow from 1965 to 1980, will be held at Durham Cathedral, on February 24.
The preacher at the service, which will take place during 3.30pm Evensong, will be Lord Habgood a former Bishop of Durham and Archbishop of York.
The late Bishop Hamilton came to the Durham diocese in 1941, and served as curate of Whitworth with Spennymoor.
After a spell outside the region, he returned as vicar of St John's, Newcastle, in 1958, from where he took up his last post as Bishop of Jarrow. He retired to Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, where he died in December.
