YOUNGSTERS who have an interest in childcare have been taking part in a new scheme.

Year ten pupils from Gillbrook Technology College, South Bank, have been given the chance to find out what it is like to work with young children, by taking part in a support scheme organised by Redcar and Cleveland Council's teacher recruitment officer and the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership.

Since the end of last year, 25 youngsters who showed an interest in childcare or teaching careers have been taking part in the scheme, which aims to support their career aspirations and choices.

So far, they have taken part in a story-telling workshop, visited a local primary school and day nursery and they have completed an introductory first-aid session with the St John Ambulance.

Earlier this week, they took part in a learning through play workshop, which was run by a playgroup network trainer.

The trainer demonstrated practical activities that the youngsters can teach to children, to help them learn and develop skills.

After the session, the pupils were asked to plan a play lesson, which they will teach to children at two local primary schools next month.

Nicola Hall, of the partnership, said: "The scheme has been well supported by staff at Gillbrook Technology College, who saw it as an excellent opportunity for those pupils interested in a career in teaching or childcare, to find out more about what is involved and to learn some key skills.

"All of the youngsters on the scheme have enjoyed the workshops and visits so far and, with a trip to a local college and university planned for April and May, we hope that they will go on to study relevant qualifications once they leave school in June next year."
