TV golden boys Ant and Dec are being lined up to star in a remake of the 1960s movie The Odd Couple.

They are already due to appear as Bob and Terry in an updated take on Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads.

Now they are considering a TV revamp of the classic 1968 film starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.

But Dec said: "I'm not saying which of us would be Jack and who would be Walter."

The film told of divorcees Felix and Oscar who move in together when their marriages split, only to bicker at each other.

Ant and Dec, former stars of the North-East school series Byker Grove, have had the best possible preparation for the roles. They shared a flat in Fulham when they first moved to London from Newcastle in 1995.

Dec recalls: "We had a great laugh living and working together."

But they decided to go their separate ways in 1998 in an attempt to stop eating takeaways and staying up all night playing computer games.

They did not get very far from each other, as they moved to homes two doors apart in West London.

Ant said: "We're best pals. There is no point living on the other side of the country from each other."

Before they become the modern Odd Couple, they are planning a new evening show with former SMTV co-host Cat Deeley.

Dec said: "We really miss Cat.

"The chemistry between the three of us was so good it would be terible not to do another show together."

However, they are glad that ITV's Pop Idol is finally over.

Dec said: "To be honest, I am pretty relieved.

"It was a great success, but it was a long haul and it dragged on a bit towards the end."
