An international conference will today be held at the academic home of a university professor who died in the Selby rail crash.

Prof Steve Baldwin, a University of Teesside lecturer, had centred his research on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children prior to his death.

Prof Baldwin had been working towards helping children to withdraw safely from psychiatric stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, used to calm their erratic behaviour.

The Professor Steve Baldwin Memorial Conference will be held at 10.30am today at the University of Teesside to discuss concerns over categorising children as ADHD.

The seminar has been jointly organised by university staff and the Overload Network International.

Janice Hill, a parent and founder of Overload, said: "Prof Baldwin was aware of the many factors influencing a child's behaviour divorce, oversized classrooms, learning difficulties, learning disabilities and nutritional problems.

"Steve argued strongly that there were no data to support the continued use of stimulants with children and teenagers and that they were being used as a quick fix, a form of health fascism, being driven by exploitation, ideology and profit."
