Fourteen-year-old Graham Johnson won the Huddersfield Junior Squash Open for Under-15s last month. The West Yorkshire event was keenly contested with entrants from many counties and in winning Johnson did extremely well to only drop one game throughout the whole tournament.
In the final, he was up against Craig Winthrop, a county player from Cumbria, in a match which was expected to be difficult, but which he eventually ran out the winner 3-0. His coach Bill West was very happy at his success and said that this match had psychological significance - given the convincing scoreline of 9/3, 9/5, 9/2 - because he had never before managed to beat Winthrop in several previous encounters. The final was filmed on video and Johnson is now aiming to get a copy to keep with his trophy.
The win also comes at an opportune time, as Johnson has entered the British Under-15 National Championships, which are taking place in Wolverhampton in today.
Graham is the Durham & Cleveland Under-15 county number 1. He trains at the Oak Leaf Sports Complex in Newton Aycliffe as well as
playing for the squash club's fourth team in the senior squash leagues.
* Graham reached the semi-finals of the Milford Open (Under-15s) in South Milford on Sunday.
