Quakers RC

Seven Quakers competed in the Pocklington 10 road race held on 24 February near York.

A total number of 654 runners participated and first home for the club was Ian Scott, who was 30th overall, 4th O-45 vet in a time of 58:06, next was Wayne Bramley who was 41st overall and 10th O/40 vet in 59:11 (PB), followed by Graham Park, 86th 1:02:49 (PB).

Dawn Richardson was first lady home for the club, 6th lady and 101st overall in a time of 1:03:39 (PB) followed by Dave Giblin, 148th, 1:06:40 (PB), Caroline Davies, 48th lady, 305th overall, 1:14:19 and Julie Giblin, 114th lady, 523rd overall, 1:26:05.

The men's team took a creditable tenth place out of 79 teams, and the Ladies were also tenth out of 33 teams.

Three members of Quakers travelled to Liversedge to compete in their annual half marathon. The course was very hilly and challenging, however, Graham Park had another excellent run and was first home for the club in a time of 86:28 finishing 37th out of 375 runners. Next home was Dawn Richardson who was 48th overall and 3rd lady, 88:18, followed by John Ross, 117th, 96:09.

Shildon

A trio of Shildon runners completed a 550-mile round trip to the National Cross Country championships held at Aston Court Estate, Bristol.

However, Natalie Owens had a great run in the Under-17 girls event finishing in 51st position from 148 finishers in a time of 21.00. The winner was K Wooton (Bedford and County AC) in 18.09.

In the junior men's event Paul Best had an excellent run to finish in 50th place in 34.03 with club mate Stephen Brown 129th in 40.05 out of 139 finishers. The winners was L McCash (Shaftsbury Harriers) in 30.49.

For any runner or spectator travelling to London for the London Marathon a coach will pick up at various points in the North-East. The coach will leave late afternoon on Friday, April 13 for two nights in a hotel in Finchley, transport to the London Marathon Exhibition on Saturday morning for registration and transport to the start in Greenwich Park on Sunday morning. The coach returns after the race late Sunday afternoon. Anyone interested please call Jeff Rippon on (0191) 4134986.

l Anyone interested in middle distance or springs the club trains at Stadium 2000 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturday mornings and competes in two cross country leagues and various indoor meetings during the winter months. Newton Aycliffe

Brent Morfoot had a tremendous week, producing two personal best performances over the 10k distance. His first success was in the Penny Pot race at Harrogate where he ran 40mins 34secs, only to eclipse this at the Chester-le-Street 10k where he had an outstanding run, just failing to beat the 40 min barrier by five secs.

One runner who did break the barrier was the fast improving Mike O'Sullivan who dipped under to finish in 39 mins 59 secs. The Team Valley relays produced some outstanding personal performances, with the Senior Men's team finishing in 15th place. Ian Monkman led off for our fastest time of the day of 11 mins 11 secs over the 2.2 mile distance. Peter Milburn kept the charge going to run 12.13, handing on to Adam Harker 13.48, Colin Gibson 12.59, John Burnside 14.11 and Mike O'Sullivan 14.03.

The Vet's team had an equally good showing with a 15th place among the vets teams. They were led off by Ray Todd 16.06, Rob Nicholson 15.41, Dave McKenzie 15.31, Sean Barnett 14.42, Adam Gibson 13.28 and the outstanding Dave McKenzie 16.06 on his second leg. The Ladies team faired a little better to finish 13th in their category, led by Sue Milburn with a 14.08, Anne McLoughlin 17.38, Pat Edwards 16.36 and Rachel Scholey 16.28.

The NYSD cross-country at Saltburn was a triumph for the Under-17 boys, with a fine individual performance from Mathew Bell, again winning the race despite taking a wrong turn, Mark Richardson had his best place this season to finish fourth, with Liam O'Kell an excellent 10th. In the Under-15 boys race Chris Kerr had his highest finish of the season to record fifth place ahead of Adam Gibson seventh. The Under-13 girls race saw Jessica Scholey into 30th place in a tough race. In the Ladies race Sue Milburn continued her good season with a 15th placing, ahead of Rachel Scholey 33rd and Pat Edwards 38th. In the Senior Men's race Peter Milburn came back first in a very good 25th place, ahead of Colin Gibson in 48th and Dave Middleton in 108th.
