Darlington'S art gallery is to be moved to a bigger venue.

The plan to open a new art gallery in Darlington and convert display space at the Crown Street library into a computer suite follows a lengthy campaign by Darlington Society of Arts.

The group has campaigned to stop the closure of the existing gallery, but will now be first to use the new gallery at the Town Hall.

Darlington Borough Council was forced to look at the possibility of converting the existing gallery in the face of Government legislation setting out new standards for libraries and museums, with a need for public computer access for all.

But the society and other campaigners were concerned the plans would mean the town would no longer be able to host major art exhibitions.

Last night, councillors approved the conversion of its rates hall into an art gallery.

A council spokesman said the move followed consultation with a number of groups which use the facility.

He said: "They will have a bigger exhibition space, which we will revamp so the hanging space will be improved, and there is better parking."

The first exhibition, mounted by the society, will be held in October and bookings are already in place for next year.

There will be no loss of amenities during the change over between venues, said the spokesman.

Councillor Dorothy Long, cabinet member for leisure, said: "We will be able to provide a community space that is ideal for both exhibitors and visitors. We believe the new gallery will enhance the service and we look forward to working with all of the groups who will use the new gallery, as we develop our visual arts strategy."

The computer suite is expected to be developed this year.
