A 86-year-old woman was examined by paramedics yesterday after a fire in her kitchen in Havilland Road, Thornaby, Teesside. Firefighters were called to the house at about 10.30am after the woman emptied an ashtray into a bin, not realising it contained a lit cigarette. The blaze was out by the time fire engines arrived and the woman was unhurt.
