A VIDEO of the popular Northern Echo Local Heroes Awards has gone on sale.

The awards, held last November, were organised to recognise the achievements of unsung amateur sportsmen and women in the North-East.

Many sporting heroes were honoured and the overall winner was 83-year-old Kip Watson.

He set up an over-40s football league in Sunderland, in 1980, which has grown to include more than 1,500 teams from all over the area.

The awards, organised in association with Darlington Building Society and Century FM, were hosted by the editor of The Northern Echo, Peter Barron, at the Tall Trees Hotel in Yarm.

Prime Minister Tony Blair sent a video message of support to the event, which raised £2,000 for Sports Aid Northern.

A video of the evening's events can now be bought for £9.99. Copies are available from The Northern Echo's head office in Priestgate, or by sending a cheque for £9.99 made payable to Newsquest North-East Ltd to Claire Reeder at The Northern Echo, Po Box 14, Priestgate, Darlington, DL1 1NF.
