POLICE officers in South Tyneside have claimed success following another high-profile initiative.
Operation Lonestar II cut core crime by 21.9 per cent in the Boldons, Cleadon and Whitburn, and also addressed the fear of crime by successfully increasing the number of officers on foot patrol.
The operation resulted in 16 arrests for offences ranging from theft, assault and criminal damage. Ten names were passed on to housing offices where children were involved in disorder, and 28 letters sent to the homes of others involved in disorder.
Following complaints of speeding around schools, extensive checks were also carried out, resulting in seven speeding tickets and 12 vehicles were clamped for not having any vehicle tax.
Stop and search has also increased from 2,996 between February 2000 to January 2001 to 4,226 between February 2001 and January this year.
