PEOPLE living in two Derwentside wards are being urged to help make a difference to the future of their towns and villages by taking part in community appraisals.

The work is being carried out by the Durham Rural Community Council in the Stanley Hall and Esh wards, which include Esh village, Langley Park and Quebec.

Funded by Derwentside District Council, the purpose of the appraisals is to find out how residents feel about where they live.

Community appraisal co-ordinator Gillian Fortune said last night: "This is about local people wanting to do something about their communities.

"A village model has been built and will be taken around several venues to allow people to put their suggestions for local improvements on to the model.

"It is hoped that as many people as possible will come along and put their views forward during the forthcoming community consultation events."

The latest drive follows the success of appraisals in Annfield Plain, where a community partnership has been formed, and in Delves Lane, where a partnership is in the process of being created.

Ms Fortune said Annfield plain had already seen environmental improvements as a direct result of the consultations.

The improvements included litter bins and poop scoop bins, as well as signs for walks.

A meeting will be held at Woodview Community Centre, Langley Park, from 1pm to 7pm on Thursday.

The second event will be at the East Stanley Primary School, Stanley Hall, from noon until 5pm on Saturday.

Groups and organisations are welcome to put up display boards with items for sale or display.

There will also be an opportunity for residents to take part in a photography project.

Anyone who is interested in being involved or would like further information is asked to contact Clare Jones or Gillian Fortune, on (01429) 823067.
