POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an alleged road rage incident which resulted in two cars being damaged.

The incident started at about 7am on Good Friday.

Two four-wheel drive vehicles, a dark blue Daihatsu Four Track and a white Toyota Hi-Lux, narrowly avoided colliding at the junction of Heighington Lane and St Andrews Way, on the outskirts of Newton Aycliffe.

Police said the two drivers exchanged angry words and gestures as they headed south along St Andrews Way towards the roundabout linking with the A167.

The cars then drove down the short stretch of dual carriageway leading to junction 59 of the A1(M).

As the cars headed towards the motorway, a collision took place resulting in damage to the offside rear of the Daihatsu and the front of the Toyota. Both drivers were shaken but unhurt.

The vehicles then travelled north on the A1, with the drivers flashing their lights at each other. Both drivers also contacted the police on their mobile phones to complain about the other's behaviour.

Officers caught up with the motorists at Gypsy Lane, just off the Bradbury interchange.

Statements have been taken from the female driver of the Daihatsu, who is from Ferryhill Station, and the Darlington man driving the Toyota.

Police are keen to speak to any witnesses who may have seen the way either or both cars were being driven.

Anyone who can help should contact Newton Aycliffe police office on (01325) 314401.
