AN 85-year-old stroke victim yesterday became the latest target of conmen, who robbed her of £140.

The elderly woman, who lives on her own, answered a knock at the door of her bungalow in West Street Cottages, Blackhall, east Durham, between 10.30am and 11am.

Two men waiting outside asked if she would like to buy any fish from a small white van they had parked nearby.

When she agreed, they produced two bags and were able to confuse her so much she parted with £140 in notes. The pair then handed back a couple of £1 coins to make the deal seem more realistic before leaving.

Police officers who visited the confused victim found the bags contained little more than scraps.

The man who did most of the talking was in his late thirties to forties with thick, dark, swept back hair. He was tanned and about 5ft 8in tall. He claimed he came from Whitby but was said to have a local accent.

He wore a dark coloured mid-length casual jacket, a dark blue jumper and dark trousers.

Officers are especially keen to hear from anyone who may have more details on the white van, such as the registration of the vehicle.

Anyone who can help should contact Peterlee CID on (0191) 5862621 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
