A NEW £225,000 tourist information centre has opened in the heart of Herriot Country.
The centre in Thirsk Market Place offers more services and has the space to stock a wider range of local products than did the old premises.
The manager and a volunteer force of 30 people used to operate from the World of James Herriot centre in the famous author's former surgery in Kirkgate.
"The move is giving us the opportunity to streamline the organisation of the TIC (tourist information centre), bringing it under the wing of the council's tourism section," said development manager Karen Galloway yesterday.
"And with more space we hope that locally-produced crafts can be stocked, along with all the maps, books and souvenirs needed by the visitors."
* Anyone wishing to sell locally-produced crafts in the shop, or to become a volunteer, should contact Ms Galloway on (01609) 767258.
