YOUNGSTERS used their heads to create an impressive sculpture as part of a youth scheme.

The art project took place at Greenfield Community and Arts Centre, Newton Aycliffe, as part of the Splash initiative, organised by the County Durham Youth Offending Service.

The initiative, funded by the Youth Justice Board, brings together young people from a range of backgrounds.

Some youngsters are referred because they are on the edges of crime, others live in deprived areas of the county.

They join children from youth clubs and schools to create a socially inclusive scheme.

The Newton Aycliffe project involved youngsters working with local artists on a sculpture called Head of History.

The children did sketches on the theme of people's heads and one was selected for the sculpture.

A spokeswoman for the centre said: "They made a three-dimensional image from chicken wire and newspaper and modelled it with papier mache. They were then asked to bring in photographs of themselves and their families and they were photocopied and used to cover the head. It looks absolutely brilliant.
