TWO motorcyclists who were killed in a collision on the North York Moors last weekend have been formally identified by police.

They were Frederick Alan Bowman, 67, of Ketton Avenue, Darlington, and Cheryl Moor, 34, from Cottingham, near Hull, Humberside They were riding a Yamaha and a Honda respectively when they were involved in a collision on the A169 Pickering to Whitby road, near the Goathland turn-off, on Sunday. Police are still appealing to witnesses, and particularly would like to speak to a couple Mr Bowman is believed to have met earlier that afternoon. He had been at Helmsley where he was seen talking to a motorcycling couple who are believed to come from Loftus, Cleveland. Anyone who can help is asked to call police on (01723) 500300.

MAN ATTACKED: Police are investigating after a 30-year-old man received severe facial injuries in The Normanby public house, Normanby, near Middlesbrough. The unnamed man has told Cleveland Police he does not know the identity of his attacker. An ambulance took him to hospital where he received eight stitches to a torn lip. Anyone with information about the incident, which happened on Sunday evening, is asked to contact South Bank police on (01642) 302622.

BOY RESCUED: Police stormed a terraced house after a two-year-old boy was held hostage for more than three hours. The team moved into Lincoln Street, York, at about 9.20pm last night after a man kicked in the door of one of the houses. They stormed the house soon after midnight to recover the boy, who is said to be the man's son. The boy was returned to his mother. Nobody was injured. A man was later charged with a breach of the peace.

LIFE SUPPORT BOOST: Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service has been included in a £26.5m National Lottery share-out for England's hospitals and ambulance services. Fifty more of its ambulances are to be equipped with electro-cardiogram machines to treat heart attack victims, and defibrillators. The funds are coming from the New Opportunities Fund.

CHARITY TRIP: A cross-Channel charity fundraising trip has been organised. The two-day trip to Bruges, from June 7 to 9, costs £135, to include return travel and accommodation.
