THE future of a model car club has been secured after organisers issued an urgent appeal for new members.

A few months ago, Darlington and District Radio Controlled Car Club was on the brink of closure because of dwindling local interest.

But after an appeal in The Northern Echo, the club has seen a resurgence of interest and is now on a stronger footing.

Membership numbers have risen from a handful in November to 40 and club officials are delighted with the response to their appeal.

Chairman Jim Manning said: "It is good to know that we will be able to carry on in the future, because it was looking pretty bleak for us not so long ago."

The club, which was started in 1985, has attracted scores of youngsters, as well as adults, from Darlington and the surrounding villages.

Since its formation, it rapidly became one of the largest model car racing groups in the North-East, with more than 80 members at one stage.

Race nights are held each Wednesday at Hurworth Grange Community Centre, near Darlington, and club members regularly take part in competitions.

Prospects had looked grim last year because the lack of membership money meant the club was facing difficulties in hiring the centre and meeting other costs.

But Mr Manning said: "We will certainly be continuing after this influx of new members. It is good news, because the hobby gives youngsters something to do and take an interest in outside of school."

Race nights start at 7pm each Wednesday. Anyone interested in finding out more is invited to attend meetings.

The annual subscription fee is £5
