CRICKET fan Peter Beardsley will help promoted Durham Dynamos launch their Norwich Union National League programme at home to Warwickshire Bears tomorrow.

The former Newcastle and England footballer will officially open the Universal Kids' Zone, which will be in operation during all eight of Durham's home division one matches.

The club's marketing manager, James Bailey, said: "We want to attract youngsters and families, and our partnership with Universal Building Society will allow us to do this by providing a whole day of family entertainment."

The zone will be open an hour before the 1pm start, and there is also a family picnic area nearby.

But Durham are determined not to provide a picnic for the Bears, who finished third in division one last season but are unlikely to field overseas player Shaun Pollock. The South African board allowed their star all-rounder to come over for the summer only on the understanding that he would not be overworked.

Although former Durham paceman Melvyn Betts returned after a groin injury for the current championship match between Warwickshire and Leicestershire yesterday, he could also be left out. Warwickshire did not see Betts as a one-day bowler last season, preferring to rely on all-rounders like Dougie Brown, while they also tend to use two spinners in Ashley Giles and Neil Smith.

Durham recall Martin Love, Andrew Pratt, Michael Gough, Mark Davies and Neil Killeen after missing the match against Sri Lanka.

"We have a few options after taking a lot more positives out of the game than Sri Lanka did," said skipper Jon Lewis.

"Russel Arnold played a great innings, but if we had taken the chance to run out Aravinda De Silva early on I think we could have gone on to win."

All-rounder Danny Law had a scan on his back yesterday and will know the results on Tuesday, while Stephen Harmison's side strain is not as bad as first feared.

Nicky Phillips' hand injury has recovered sufficiently for him to bowl his off-spin, but he still feels discomfort when batting and fielding and will probably start playing again in the three-day second team match against Middlesex at Chester-le-Street club's ground starting on Wednesday.
