FINAL preparations are being made for an extravaganza of fun that is expected to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

This year's eight-day Thirsk Festival is expected to be the biggest yet, raising vital cash for local good causes.

The event is now in its fourth year since it was launched by the local Rotary Club.

This year's festival starts on July 6 and continues until July 14, incorporating a comprehensive programme of events and entertainments.

The Grand Finale weekend, on Sowerby Flatts, will include an It's a Knockout competition, a madcap bed race, a classic car rally and some spectacular hot air ballooning.

Throughout the week there will also be a wide range of musical events in the town hall.

Performers include the Memphis Belle Swing Orchestra and the Chicago Teddy Bears Society Jazz Band.

Other musical events will take place in pubs and churches, as well as the town's market place.

Organisers have now established a website - www.thirskfestival.org - which carries full details of all the confirmed events.

The festival was established by the Rotary Club to promote a range of entertainment for the people of the town, to build community spirit, and to promote local organisations.

The three festivals so far have all proved highly successful, raising about £51,000, which has been shared among 106 charities.

"The festival is something the town has taken to its heart," said a spokesman for the Rotary Club yesterday.

"The two days on the Flatts are very well supported, with thousands of people turning up for a fun day out."

Tickets for all events are available from Tavea's, Fox's Copy Centre, and White Rose Books in the market place.

Telephone bookings can also be made by calling (01845) 587382.
