YOUNGSTERS from east Cleveland are jumping for joy after their fundraising efforts helped get an athletics scheme out of the starting blocks.

Fifteen children from across east Cleveland took part in the Kirkleatham Fun Run on March 10 and raised almost £300 for the East Cleveland Athletics Tracks Association.

Last week, The Northern Echo reported that Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council had pledged £40,000 towards the £400,000 project, which means a bid can now be submitted to the National Lottery, which it is hoped will provide the rest of the cash.

The youngsters were given a special thank you by Redcar paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson, a coach for the organisation.

The money raised by the youngsters will go towards equipment, but Graham Hall, who has been working on the project for almost ten years, appealed to adults taking part in the Great North Run to follow the children's examples and raise money for the project through sponsorship.
