POLICE investigating the murder of a 44-year-old man who was bludgeoned to death in his home said last night he probably knew his attacker.

Detective Superintendent Ian Sharp, who is heading the investigation into the killing of Sydney Baldwin, said there had been no signs of a break-in at the home in 5th Avenue Heaton, Newcastle.

Mr Baldwin, described as a larger-than-life character who was well known in the area, died about 24 hours before he was discovered lying in his kitchen by a window cleaner at 5.30pm on Tuesday.

Det Supt Sharp said Mr Baldwin, known as Syd, had died of head injuries inflicted by a weapon which had yet to be identified.

He said: "We are still trying to establish a motive and are looking at every possibility.

"There was no sign of forced entry so we must presume that he must have know his attacker.

"We will be talking to friends, family and associates to build up a picture of his lifestyle."

Mr Baldwin was last seen at about 9pm on Sunday when he bought a bottle of gin to drink at home.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen him since then, especially on Monday.

Det Supt Sharp said detectives were aware that he had been stabbed three years ago.

He said: "The attacker, who has been in court and has served his time, contacted police as soon as he heard of the death. He has been interviewed and we are happy with his movements on the night and are moving on from that line of inquiry."

Det Supt Sharp said Mr Baldwin was well liked, but he was known to be verbally abusive to people and often upset them when he had been drinking.
