Safety strategy consultation

AFTER expressing concern about the omission of lighting plans for the Prebends Bridge area in Durham City Council's Community Safety Strategy for 2002-2005, the president of Durham Students' Union has been invited to contribute to a consultation about the document. Two meetings are due to take place during the next month, which will allow students, as well as residents, to feed in to the strategy and also to express their concerns in relation to the area. DSU's communications officer, Craig Jones, said: "While this consultation comes rather late on in the process, it shows that the council has finally realised that students and local residents have to be listened to on this issue. We hope that it will set in stone good practice for future consultation and communication on such important issues."

RIVER NOTES: Durham University Chamber Choir will hold a riverside choral session on Prebends Bridge, on Saturday, June 8, at 8pm. The event, entitled Music on the River will take place, hopefully, as the sun sets along the banks of the River Wear, under the shadow of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The choir performance, admission to which is free, will showcase the work of some of the most talented choral performers within the university.

FASHION STAKES: The forthcoming Fashion Show in Durham University will provide an exciting time for many aspiring models and dancers. The event, the latest in a series of annual performances, will gather together some of Durham University's prospective models, supported by routines staged by some of the most slickest dancers in the student community. Auditions were staged last month and required applicants to learn a dance routine as well as pose along an imaginary catwalk in order to showcase the kind of performances that will be staged on the night as they model various fashions for eager guests. The fashion show has previously attracted fervent media and press attention on a nationwide scale, including coverage from a high-profile magazine. The event also has the potential to attract the attention of local modelling agencies and talent-spotters.

ACTING UP: Durham Student Theatre (DST) group is a broad support organisation for the development of student theatrical talent within Durham. Based in the Assembly Rooms, in the city centre, DST supports rising stars through helping to launch productions and through providing skill-building workshops on stage work and performing art. DST has recently elected a new executive committee, which seems set to build upon the success of previous shows which have been put on throughout the last academic year in Durham. Recent efforts of DST, working in conjunction with college theatre groups, have included productions of The Importance of Being Earnest, Hamlet and a compendium of the old Grimm Tales
