THE British Army is promising an impressive show of its military might for the public later this month as Catterick Garrison's open day returns.

Last year's event had to be cancelled as units which would have been part of the event were called away to help clear up in the wake of the disease, while movement in the area was also limited by restrictions.

But, 12 months on and with the outbreak controlled, the Garrison is putting the finishing touches to this year's event which it hopes will more than make up for lost time.

Rides in some of the most modern military machinery, visits and displays by Army helicopters, and demonstrations of the artillery's firepower are all on the programme.

Organisers are promising fun for all the family and there will be performances by the massed bands of the Corps of Signals, the King's Division Waterloo Band and the band and bugles of the Light Division.

The White Helmets Motorcycle Display Team top the bill in the main arena while Garrison Radio will be providing the commentary.

Army spokesman Lt Col Johnny Howard Vyse said: "Naturally, it was very disappointing last year that we were unable to go ahead with the Open Day.

"This year, however, we are hoping to make up for that loss and make it a special day, particularly as it will also mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee."

The Open Day is scheduled to take place at Marne Barracks on the edge of the A1 just south of Catterick Village between 10am and 5pm on Saturday, June 22.

Admission will cost £1 for adults and 50p for children with all proceeds going to Army charities.
