A food directory is being launched this week to encourage people to buy local produce.

The updated version of the Ryedale Local Food Directory has been produced by a partnership including Ryedale District Council, York and Ryedale Friends of the Earth, and the Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Primary Care Group.

It highlights the fact that much of the food bought in the area has been transported great distances and the alternative is to buy locally-produced food and details produce available from a wide variety of local sources, including farmers' markets, such as the one in Malton.

Buying locally-produced food can help alleviate problems such as traffic congestion and climate change, caused by unnecessary vehicle movements, to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

The directory also has a section on organic produce and another showing where to obtain "fair-traded" food.

Ryedale's environmental co-ordinator John Brown said: "There are many benefits in buying locally-sourced food, which include boosting the local economy, improved health from eating wholesome, fresher food and social benefits gained by the strengthening of local communities."
