FOOTBALL bosses have begun a search for a new club mascot - after their old one retired to become a town's first elected mayor.

Third Division Hartlepool United is in desperate need of a new signing to entertain their fans after H'Angus the Monkey was famously voted in as mayor.

Supporter Stuart Drummond, the man who had worn the monkey suit for three years, is now enjoying his new role in the political spotlight.

His voluntary job as Pools' club mascot is up for grabs, because Hartlepool Borough Council chiefs refused to let him carry on both roles.

Stuart, 28, said he was sad to give up his 7ft monkey outfit, especially after the club helped to pay his £500 election deposit.

But a Hartlepool club spokesman said yesterday: "Since Stuart was elected Mayor of Hartlepool H'Angus has kept a low profile - now we're looking to get him back in the groove. We are looking for a charismatic, friendly and fun-loving person to take on what we feel is a serious job at the football club.

"The primary function of H'Angus is to promote a positive image of the football club, particularly by interaction with children.

"Whoever does get the job will be expected to be responsible for that image and must at all times conduct themselves in a manner which will not reflect badly on the club."
