A GRADE II listed bridge, partly washed away in floods more than 18 months ago, should not be widened, according to a planning official.

The issue over whether to widen Creet's Bridge at Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, has gone on for months.

The 18th Century bridge remains closed and a temporary bypass crossing is in place until a final decision is taken.

When North Yorkshire County Council's planning committee meets on Tuesday, Alwyn Shaw, head of minerals and waste planning, is recommending refusal of a widening scheme. He said a wider bridge would be contrary to county policies and Government guidance and would adversely affect the bridge's special character and visual appearance.

Due to opposition to widening, Mr Shaw also said it was unlikely the Government would grant listed building consent and there was a strong possibility of a costly public inquiry "with no guarantee of success".

Harrogate Borough Council, and Kirkby Malzeard and Azerley parish councils have all backed the widening.

But objections have been lodged by English Heritage, North Yorkshire's Heritage Unit, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, the Ancient Monuments Society, the Cyclists' Touring Club and the Council for British Archaeology.

Campaigners for widening say it is needed for modern traffic, but opponents say it would detract from the character and appearance of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, would increase traffic speeds and reduce road safety.
