A ROLLER shutter approved for a supermarket entrance in Barnard Castle brought criticism from a councillor.

Safeway applied to amend the entrance design of its £15m store by moving it six metres along the frontage, bringing it in line with other stores nationally.

Rather than having glazed doors, it would be left open, with a warm air curtain circulating, members of Teesdale District Council's planning south committee were told.

The roller shutter would come down when the shop was closed, to provide security.

Councillor John Watson said: "I don't want to see Barnard Castle becoming like Bishop Auckland after 5pm - shutters pulled down and looking like a Wild West town."

Head of planning, Ken Hughes, said the council had approved other shutters facing the car park.

Members approved the amendments.

Although Safeway has hinted that a new store might be completed next year, no start date has yet been identified.
