SPORTING volunteers in Stockton are being thanked for their contribution to community life.

The town's borough council is holding a special ceremony to recognise the work of people who have given up their time for more than 20 years in helping out and coaching sporting activities at local leisure centres.

On Monday, the mayor, Councillor Jean O'Donnell will present framed certificates to those people, in thanks for their efforts and time.

Coun O'Donnell said: "This is one small way we can show our appreciation to people who have given their time and enthusiasm voluntarily to sport in Stockton.

"They are a shining example to the whole community by dedicating their time and expertise to helping youngsters in sport."
