CONSTRUCTION group Metnor is to start work on a multi-million pound stadium for the Newcastle Falcons rugby team.

The £12m contract involves the construction at the Kingston Park of a 3,800-seater stand, on three levels and a terraced stand and bar capable of accommodating 2,500 spectators. This will take capacity to 9,800.

Subsequent phases will include indoor and outdoor training facilities in conjunction with the University of Northumbria and Northumberland Rugby Union.

The first part of the project is due for completion in time for the start of next season.

The Centre of Rugby will be home to the Newcastle Falcons England Rugby Academy.

Steve Rankin, chief executive of construction firm Metnor, which will manage the project and construct the buildings, said: "Once the project is complete, the Newcastle Falcons will have facilities that are second to none."

John Parkinson, chief executive of Newcastle Falcons, said: "As a result of this ambitious project, Newcastle Falcons will stand out as a beacon of excellence in the sport for the next generation of players and fans."
