VILLAGERS had a quacking time in a bid to raise funds for their Christmas appeal.

Dozens of residents of Staindrop, in County Durham, turned out for the annual duck race in the stream running through the village, which was held to raise funds for the Staindrop Christmas Lights Appeal.

The winner was local Dan O'Boyle, who walked away with £100 after his duck narrowly pipped that of Karen Dunn to the post.

Almost 800 people entered the duck race, and hundreds of pounds were raised for the appeal.

Joy Robson, secretary of the Staindrop Christmas Lights Appeal Committee, said: "As always the event was very well attended and received, and it was a very tight race.

"We are very grateful for all the support and all the money raised will be used to provide the village with what we hope will be another wonderful Christmas lights display."
