YORK Labour MP Hugh Bayley last night confirmed his intention of resigning from the Rail, Maritime and Transport union after it severed links with his constituency party.

His decision follows Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's resignation from the RMT after 47 years. Mr Prescott was among senior Labour MPs who saw the RMT end funding for their constituency parties when they refused to endorse the union's policies.

Mr Bayley said that he was still a committed trade unionist and would not resign from the RMT until he had joined another union.
