A NORTH-East school is celebrating after being chosen to participate in a flagship arts scheme.

Belmont Comprehensive School, in Durham, is one of only 25 schools in Durham and Sunderland to be chosen to take part in the Creative Partnerships scheme, tipped as one of the most significant creative and cultural education ventures in a generation.

It will give tens of thousands of youngsters the chance to participate in and enjoy cultural and artistic activities, working with their teachers and professionals including artists, dancers, actors, sculptors and poets.

Belmont's selection success comes after it gained a silver Artsmark award from the Arts Council and held a concert with its partner schools at Durham's Gala Theatre.

Peter Jenkinson, national director of Creative Partnerships, said: "I believe that Creative Partnerships provides one very powerful, focused, high profile and inspirational tool for change in schools.

"Through shifting the expectations of young people, we are able to create a new dynamic, cultural arena that broadens young people's horizons and genuinely captures the imagination of children, parents and carers, teachers and communities."

Belmont Comprehensive's headteacher Pat Howarth, said: "I am delighted that our school is taking part in this exciting venture. We will be working with a wide variety of artists to develop a vibrant arts programme at Belmont."
