A FLAGSHIP project to help and support vulnerable people has been opened.

The East Raby Street scheme, in Darlington, has transformed an eyesore site into a new unit providing support and accommodation for 15 people, mostly with mental health problems.

It has been developed by supported housing specialists, Carr-Gomm, and will provide people with a home for up to two years as they prepare for independent life.

The £810,000 scheme features 15 self-contained flats, with communal facilities, kitchen and laundry.

Eight of the flats were opened last year but the final seven were not completed until last week.

Most of the residents will be people facing mental health issues but the scheme will also house youngsters leaving care, people with learning difficulties and women escaping domestic violence.

The residents will be referred by social services and Carr-Gomm and will each receive about six hours a week individually-tailored support.

Tenants will be invited to take part in life-skill sessions and be able to use an on-site resource centre with IT training and art facilities.

Carr-Gomm spokeswoman Maria Hammond said: "The East Raby Street project is a major facility for the Darlington area and is meeting a need highlighted in the area's local housing strategy."
