Three people appeared in court yesterday charged with the manslaughter of a mother-of-five who died during a bar brawl.

Colin Mattinson, 21, his mother Joyce Mattinson, 41, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named, all deny killing Teresa Mennell, 59. The three, together with Lisa Craig, 18, also entered not guilty pleas to a charge of violent disorder, relating to the same incident on February 23. Mrs Mennell, from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was visiting her son Colin Fraser, in Gateshead, when violence broke out outside the town's Metropole pub.

ASSAULT CASE: A man has been warned he could face jail after admitting indecently assaulting a teenager. Ian Cairns, 19, attacked the 17-year-old girl, who cannot be named, on October 10, last year. He was originally charged with attempted rape but, after "considerable discussions", a guilty plea to the lesser charge was accepted at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday. Cairns, of Wensleydale Avenue, Usworth, Washington, was granted conditional bail to a hostel until he is sentenced on July 26.
