A SECOND phase of works to improve parking and ease traffic congestion on a Hartlepool estate has been given the go-ahead.

More grass verges are to be converted into vehicle bays in Clavering Road to tackle long-running problems posed by roadside parking.

The proposals have been approved following the success of a similar scheme carried out last year after consultations with residents.

Ian Parker, Hartlepool Borough Council's head of technical services, said: "The finer details of the scheme in terms of the number of vehicle bays that will be provided are still being drawn up and we will be talking to residents to ensure their views are taken on board.

"The first phase of works has certainly improved the traffic situation along Clavering Road and we are aiming to build on the success of that."

Works carried out last year cost £17,000 and the same amount is being provided for the second phase.

The money is coming from a highways fund administered by the council's north neighbourhood consultative forum.

A second scheme has been given the go-ahead, which will provide hard standing areas on grass verges in Throston Grange Lane to create safer parking.

About £10,000 has been committed for the project, also from the forum's highways fund.
