Richmond took over at the top of the Teesside & District Union of Golf Clubs Inter Club League with a good win over neighbours Catterick.

With Darlington's match being postponed it handed Richmond a great chance and they took it by leapfrogging them and Teesside at the top of the Second Division.

It was not all plain sailing for the league's new leaders but they got off to the best possible start when Michael Marsh and Gary Catt gave them a boost early on with good victories.

Richmond capitalised and went into a 12 point lead with all of their scratch players enjoying positive results. Phil Leahy replied for Catterick but thereafter the hosts took control and claimed a 22-2 scoreline.

Second-placed Teesside knew a victory at Cleveland would take them nearer to the top spot, but the latter showed they have not given up on a promotion spot with a 15-9 win.

The championship race in the First Division is also hotting up after leading pair Eaglescliffe and Seaton Carew made the most of third-placed Castle Eden's blank week. Eaglescliffe's clash at Middlesbrough was a close affair. The former's number one player Andrew Blythe took the first points with a win over Tom Robinson.

Julian Wynn continued Eaglescliffe's promising start when he gained a last green win over England international Jonathan Lupton. But Middlesbrough refused to lie down and they clawed themselves back into the clash and the match ended12-12.

Hugh Hamilton and Durham County champion James Harper gave Seaton Carew a tremendous start at Bishop Auckland.

Graham Milne and Wayne Hewitt scored for Bishops but John Ellwood restored the lead.

The handicap games were even tighter but Seaton recorded their second consecutive 13-11 away win.

In the other top-flight match bottom-placed Billingham were defeated 15-9 by in-form Hartlepool, who moved above Bishop Auckland. Barnard Castle's match with Third Division leaders Hunley Hall was postponed and it gave the chasing pack a chance to close the gap.

This meant that Blackwell Grange overtook Castle with a convincing 23-1 victory over Wynyard. Charlie Morrison, Bob Severs, S Dixon and D Young all impressed in the clash.

Wilton went to Dinsdale Spa in the other match and it was the latter who kept up their promotion hopes with a 17-7 success.

Results: Division One - Hartlepool 15 Billingham 9; Middlesbrough 12 Eaglescliffe 12; Bishop Auckland 11 Seaton Carew 13.

Division Two - Cleveland 15 Teesside 9; Richmond 22 Catterick 2; Darlington P Saltburn P.

Division Three - Barnard Castle P Hunley Hall P; Blackwell Grange 23 Wynyard 1; Dinsdale Spa 17 Wilton 7.
