THE biggest event on a community's calendar returns this summer after missing a year due to the foot-and-mouth crisis.

The annual Steam Engine and Fair Organ Rally at Masham, North Yorkshire, normally attracts thousands of people from across the UK - and organisers are already predicting that this year's event is on course to be one of the best.

"We were worried people may have found other things to do since we last held the rally, but that hasn't seemed to be the case at all," said spokeswoman Flo Granger.

"In fact, we have had calls from all over the country inquiring about the date for this year. It seems people can't wait to come back."

Highlights on Saturday, and Sunday, July 20 and 21, include a stunt show by crowd favourite, the Kangaroo Kid, a world record holder for feats performed on his quad bike.

So many vintage and classic tractors have entered the parade, they have had to be split into two categories, while all other competition classes are also full.

"We also have the biggest fair organ we've ever seen," said Mrs Grainger. "It comes complete with a stage and a dance troupe from Scarborough, who will be dancing the cancan."

Other attractions include fairground rides and stalls, a beer tent staffed by Masham's Theakston's and Black Sheep breweries, as well as a marquee packed with local produce for sale.

"We thought, after last year, it was important to do what we could to support those hit by the foot-and-mouth crisis, so we are hoping people will come to see what the Dales can offer," said Mrs Grainger.
