SOWERBY Gala helped to launch the week-long Thirsk Festival at the weekend.

People gathered in sunshine to watch a fire-eater and magician at Manor Farm, enjoy a marching band and children's sports, admire local gardeners' triumphs in the produce marquee, and to spend a few pounds on the stalls.

"It was a lovely day," said secretary Julie Wernyj. "We normally get about 1,500 people, and I think we had that many again this weekend."

The festival itself continues until Sunday, promising music, comedy, sport and family entertainment.

The programme concludes with the Thirsk Carnival, which includes a procession from the racecourse to Sowerby Flatts, as well as an It's-a-Knockout tournament.

Full details are available from the Thirsk Tourist Information Centre and many town centre shops.
