ANYONE who has ever nursed a naked ambition to embark on the free and uninhibited lifestyle of a naturist now has their chance.

Greenacres Naturist Club in County Durham is inviting curious members of the public to throw their inhibitions and clothes to the wind and see for themselves what goes on behind the closed doors of the clubhouse.

A series of open days at the club have been arranged to take the mystery out of the much misunderstood past-time.

The public can see how those harking after a freer style of life relax among games courts, a swimming pool and sauna suite, or take part in sports days and social events. Evenings at the clubhouse involve putting clothes back on in order to dress up.

Club member Margaret Denny, who represents naturists in the North-East, Northern Ireland and Scotland, advocated the hobby for all ages and walks of life.

She said: "I think some people think we're rather peculiar behind closed doors. But it's like going into another world and throwing off the fetters once you go through the gates."

Ms Denny, 64, has been a naturist for the past 40 years and says it is a very family-friendly past-time. Participants are strictly vetted, to ensure no unsavoury characters slip through the net.

"Naturism is for all. We have three generations of children, parents and grandparents that are members of our club," she said. "If the naturist way of life interests people, come and see what does actually go on behind our hedges and fences."

Greenacres lies ten miles west of Durham City and is a member of the Central Council for British Naturism and the International Naturist Federation.

The open days take place this and next weekend. For details, contact Jean on 0191-491 0648
