PROPOSALS to build two car dealerships on land at the side of a busy trunk road, creating up to 60 jobs, are being recommended for refusal by Darlington Borough Council's planning officers.

South Cleveland Garages' plans for the site of the derelict Ivanhoe service station, on the A66, east of Darlington, are due to be considered by members of the borough council's planning committee today.

The company wants to demolish the existing garage and build the dealerships on the two-acre site, which is close to the village of Sadberge, on the east-bound carriageway of the A66. Despite receiving backing from Sadberge Parish Council, the scheme has met opposition from the Environment Agency, because of proposals to use an existing septic tank for foul water disposal.

Stockton Borough Council has also objected, saying it would have a detrimental effect on the environment.

Planning officers in Darlington cite the Borough of Darlington Local Plan and the Darlington Structure Plan in their reasons to refuse planning permission.

They argue the proposal falls outside approved development limits
