THE father of murdered British backpacker Caroline Stuttle yesterday visited the scene of her death.

Alan Stuttle retraced the last steps of the 19-year-old, who was thrown to her death from a bridge in Australia after struggling with her attacker.

On his arrival, Mr Stuttle, of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was greeted by police at the airport in Bundaberg, Queensland.

He arrived with his partner, Jane Elliot, and his son, Richard, 25, exactly three months after Caroline's death.

Mr Stuttle, 63, a well-known artist in both York and Scarborough, presented a painting of York Minster to Bundaberg Mayor Kay McDuff.

Last month, Mr Stuttle had promised he would present the mayor with a picture as a thank you gesture from the people of Yorkshire for the sympathy his family received.

Mrs McDuff told him: "We suffered a great deal of grief as well, and we are just so upset that it happened in our city."

Mr Stuttle will meet investigating officers today, before joining the Bundaberg community at a memorial tree that was planted in the town's botanical gardens.

Detectives are still trying to trace Caroline's killer.

She is thought to have been mugged for her mobile phone and purse.

Police say her attacker may have resorted to extreme violence when she fought back.
