CHARITY champions were over the moon when they counted the funds raised for two special causes and realised they had more than doubled their target.

Billy Row Green Inn fundraising committee donated almost £5,000 to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Downs Syndrome Association.

The cash crusade was launched by landlady Catherine Dakers in May, inspired by two brave little boys.

Her only grandchild, nine-month-old Sam Dakers, was cared for at the RVI's baby unit for four months after he was born premature and needed an emergency operation on his bowel.

Pub regulars Paula and Steven Edmundson, of Stanley Crook, whose son Jack, six, has Downs Syndrome joined the campaign.

The committee held a host of fundraising events including a quoits competition, treasure hunt and a golden jubilee celebration. Last week they presented £2,500 to ward four at Newcastle RVI and £2,250 to the DSA.
