A 12-PINT celebration of England's World Cup win over Argentina ended with a window fitter committing assault and affray, a court heard yesterday.

Magistrates at Harrogate heard how Michael Brett watched the game in a Ripon pub and then visited several other, ending up in the Black Bull.

Peter Scott, prosecuting, said Brett, 29, attacked Daniel Tennant, with whom he had previously rowed in a Ripon nightclub. Brett, of Moorside Dale, Ripon, punched Mr Tennant in the head after trying to make up with him.

Doorman Steve Walmsley tried to separate the two men, but all three ended up on the floor and Mr Walmsley was injured.

In mitigation, Gary Atkinson said Brett and Mr Tennant had rowed some time before and his attempts to make the peace had been misunderstood.

He was now deeply regretful and would not be going in the Black Bull again.

Although the prosecution dropped a charge of causing actual bodily harm to Mr Walmsley, Brett was ordered to pay him and Mr Tennant £50 compensation each.

He was also told to pay £115 costs, to do 60 hours of unpaid community work and stay out of the pub for three months.
