A TOP British touring car driver visited a Darlington school yesterday to talk to about his life as a racing driver.

York-born James Thompson answered questions from Hummers-knott School and Languages College pupils about his adventures behind the wheel.

He then signed autographs and gave out race tickets to see him perform in the Green Flag British Touring Car Championship, at the Croft Circuit this weekend.

The 28-year-old driver came third in last year's championship, his best position yet, and has high hopes of winning this time round.

Speaking at the school, Mr Thompson said: "It was a really good afternoon. I spent over an hour answering questions from the kids and was really surprised by their knowledge. They all wanted to know how I got into racing, and it seems there are lots of budding racing drivers out there."

Teacher Helen Tuke said: "James was brilliant. The kids were really pleased that he came along and lots will be going to support him in his race this weekend."

Mr Thompson, who lives in London, relishes his visits to the region.

He said: "I lived in York for 22 years and always enjoy coming back. I'm looking forward to racing on my local track.

"It normally brings me good luck, so hopefully I'll have a good weekend and maybe regain the Touring Car Championship lead."

Races at Croft Circuit, at Croft-on-Tees, near Darlington, start at 9:30am today, with Touring Car Championship qualifying at 3pm.

The championship race starts at midday tomorrow.

Tickets cost £10 for the Saturday, £20 for the Sunday or £25 for the weekend.
