The search is on to find Teesside's top soccer beach boys and girls. A five-a-side beach soccer competition is being organised by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, in partnership with KFC and Middlesbrough Council, on Wednesday, July 24.

It will take place on the beach in front of Leo's pub and the Regent Cinema. Categories are year five and six boys and girls and year seven and eight boys and girls. Entry fee is £10 a team, who must be accompanied by a team manager aged 16 or over. The deadline for entries is July 19. For more information, contact (01642) 444338.

MAYOR'S PRAISE: Mayor of Middlesbrough Ray Mallon has rewarded youngsters who took part in an eight-week study course in their own time. The children, from Rosewood, Pennyman, North Ormesby and St Francis' primary schools, and Newlands, St David's and Acklam Grange schools, brushed up on their literacy, maths and IT skills at Middlesbrough Football Club's study support centre. Mr Mallon, along with Hillary Maddren, widow of the late Boro ace Willie Maddren, presented the pupils with certificates at a ceremony at the Riverside Stadium.

DRAG SHOW: Teesside drag act Storm in a D-Cup will perform their last ever show at a fundraising event for Middlesbrough Sea Cadets unit next week. The two-man act will be at Cargo Fleet Social Club, Cargo Fleet Lane, Middlesbrough, on Tuesday, from 7.30pm. There will also be bingo, a raffle and a tombola. BREAKFAST CLUB: Children at a Teesside school can now enjoy a bright start to the day at a new early morning club. The 32-place breakfast club, at Alderman William Jones Primary School, Grangetown, was created after a successful bid by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council for £24,300 of funding from the Government's New Opportunities scheme.

New houses: Charles Church North-East has applied to Stockton Borough Council for planning permission to build 24 houses at area 3A, Wynyard Park, Billingham.

Top prize: Alicia Farah, 13, is enjoying the summer weather with a barbecue she won in a food safety quiz organised by Middlesbrough Council. Alicia, a pupil at the town's King Manor School, was presented with her prize by councillor Ron Lowes.

Open morning: Skelton Junior School, Skelton, is holding an open morning on Tuesday to celebrate being awarded Beacon Status. The event will take place from 9.30am to 11am and year six pupils will show visitors around the school. Refreshments will also be served in the school hall.
